What makes the vibe special is that there are no spectators. You are greeted at the gate by volunteers in costume who ask if it is your first time. People share food, gifts, and time freely. Eye contact, hugs, and connecting to people is easy. Most people who come have been to a burn before or heard about this one specifically because they wanted something different from a standard festival. The theme camps, called DreamCamps, are run by groups of people who registered and committed to offering something to the community around them. The DJs playing are participants who applied. The music moves between house, techno, and experimental electronic sounds. The physical setting is a scouting estate in Zeewolde, flat Dutch polder land, green and grassy, which is nothing like the Nevada desert but does not seem to matter much. Rain is possible, mud is possible, and people show up anyway and have a good time. The event follows the Ten Principles of Burning Man: radical inclusion, gifting, decommodification, leaving no trace, and participation among them. Leave No Trace is taken seriously: everyone takes their waste home, and the land is left as it was found.
