About

Everything at The Borderland is made by the people who attend. The camps host music, workshops, bars, performances, art installations, and places to just sit and be with people. Half of the budget goes directly to art grants, which means the site fills up with large-scale ambitious art that gets burned or dismantled at the end of the week. Access is by lottery: memberships open once a year and getting one takes luck, which means the community is mostly made up of people who really wanted to be there. People describe the social atmosphere as easy and warm in a way that surprises first-timers. Starting conversations with strangers is completely normal, gifting is constant and unassuming, and the absence of money on site changes the dynamic quickly. There is also a group called the Clown Police: people in costume who wander the site, check in on whoever they run into, and help if someone needs it. Not authority figures, just participants who decided to be present for others. The event takes place in Alversjö, in a forest, on the land the community purchased in 2023 with member donations specifically to create a permanent home for the event. The Borderland started in Sweden in 2011, spent several years in Denmark, and returned to Sweden in 2023 when the community bought the Alversjö land and now it brings over 5,000 people together
